General surgery, despite its name, is a surgical specialty that focuses on surgical treatment of abdominal organs, e.g. intestines including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on the availability of head and neck surgery specialists) and hernias.
General Surgery at the University of Utah offers a continuum of care for patients with a wide variety of general surgical problems. As a result of our clinical expertise and research programs patients receive a highly specialized assessment, the newest treatments including clinical trials for new medications and emerging surgical techniques and coordinated follow-up of their care.
